We’ve all seen the news reports. We’re suffering an epidemic
of obesity; more than 57% of American adults are overweight. And a
lot of Canadians , too. (I guess we don’t keep stats) That means
there are a lot of unhappy fatties out there trying to lose weight.
“Losin’ It” drops in on the lives of the people who
are desperate
to get in shape and the people who are happy to make a
bundle of moolah off their misery. “Over a BILLION dollars is
spent every year on weight loss products and services. We’re delighted
to scoop up our portion”. So says the owner of the “Losin
It Gym , Fitness and Weight Loss Clinic” Brad Lee. “This
innovative, state-of-the-art gym combines the best aspects of personalized
attention with the support and community spirit of a group program in
a residential setting. We’re happy to browbeat you into shape
and our nurses will stick ya’ full of useless needles to help
you lose the lard. If there’s a new fad for fatties , we’re
taking our cut”.
This gym is directly across the street from a Tim Dunkin’s doughnut
shop (no coincidence) and our staff meets there for their morning coffee
and blob of fat. Some of the staff can get away with eating this crap.
They are blessed with chemically induced high metabolisms. Everything
looks so much slower on speed.
“Losin’ It” is an ANIMATED REALITY SHOW, proving that
“TV’s not real” , the mantra of one of the show’s
creators: Rob “The Blob” Spindle . “Blobby”
, as he’s not very affectionately known , occasionally
steps
in front of the camera to comment
on the action. Each show stays within
the confines of the weightless
clinic-Gym environment with the occasional
trip home with a few staff members. With sudden and sweeping camera
movements , jerky editing and all the traits of reality TV we follow
both the patients and the staff: the skinny , possibly stoned secretary
guiding us through the back rooms where the latest weight loss chemicals
are injected in the bellies and buttocks of the clients to the gym and
workout areas where steroid bloated muscle men and women pound the treadmills
next to the hopelessly out of shape , and cellulite afflicted . We're
not picking on fatties. Not JUST on fatties , anyway.
EVERYONE IS A VICTIM AT “LOSIN’ IT”.
